Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare & AMD Athlon XP 3000+

So my nephew purchased and started playing CoD4 and said it was awesome. I installed it on to my PC and after waiting through the long installation I fired it up and much to my shagrin, it failed. Both the Multiplayer and Singleplayer did not work.

The Problem:

Basically, when I started either the splash screen would popup and then disappear. I was left sitting there frustrated. After a day or there reading forums and blogs, updating all of my drivers, flashing my bios.. blah..blah..blah. I found it. It was so simple.

The Answer: rename a file called mssmp3.asi to mssmp3.bak
It turns out that it is a bug.

I followed these simple steps and in no time I was online playing.

  1. Windows button + E to open Windows Explorer
  2. Navigate to the following CoD4 directory, default is:
    C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4\miles
  3. Right-click on the mssmp3.asi file and select “Rename”
  4. Rename it to mssmp3.bak
  5. Close Explorer and start the game !!!
