I am currently going through the same problem. I have no idea how to change any of the information on the previous thread. I am fairly inexperienced with computers.

I'm running Windows XP. I had WoW installed on this computer earlier today, but was running out of virtual memory so i purchased an external hard drive and uninstalled WoW to try and reinstall it onto that. I'm on the same internet connection and I'm in the US.

I would appreciate any help.

Hi Laceface,

Let's try editing the hosts file first,

1.  Click Start > Run

2.  Type in: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts , press OK.

3.  A windows will appear allowing you to choose which application to open the file with, select NOTEPAD

4.  When the file opens, enter the following on a new line at the end of the file, (use tab to space between IP and Hostname)

12.129.232.127       us.version.worldofwarcraft.com

5.  Save File by clicking File > Save.

6.  reboot machine and try to run WoW.

Let me know how this works or if you have any questions.

Thanks for the input.

I actually did this and had no luck with it. I then opened it back up, deleted it out and saved it and it worked. I don't have a clue as to why, but i was glad it did. I really belive WoW has some issues and it isn't always the player's PC that gives the problem.

Thanks again for your help :)

Hi W00HH,

OH Man.. sorrry guys, I just noticed that I had a typo in the path.  The path should be,

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts   (I just fixed it above, I changed dirvers to drivers)

The “hosts” file should be already be there.  If you follow the directions above again you should have better luck.  Make sure you use the corrected path.

Please let us know if you have any issues.

I don't think the backup will work.

OK.. try this.

Start > Run >  c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc > Ok

When you hit ok.. you should see a list of files including the hosts file.

Right-click the hosts file and select Open with…  and select Notepad.

Type: 12.129.232.127       us.version.worldofwarcraft.com

Click on File > Save.

Does it let you save it this way ?

Does your user account have Administrative permission on the machine?  This may be why you cannot edit and save the file.  Normally, if you can install applications such as WoW then your account does have administrative permissions but there is obviously something different here.

Remove Read-Only Flag (try this first)

1. Right click the hosts file and select properties

2. Remove the check mark from the Read Only option. (bottom of the properties window)

3. Try to edit and save the file again.

If the above doesn't work then try below,

Edit and Save the hosts file while logged in as the Administrator

You can login as Administrator two ways.  Both ask for a password however if you didn't setup a password then just leave it blank and try to login.

1. At the Welcome/Login screen press the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys twice, Enter Administrator for the username.

2. Boot into SafeMode and login as Administrator there.  You can boot into safemode by pressing F8 while the system is booting and selecting “Safe Mode” from the Boot menu.  I usually just keep pressing F8 as soon as it starts to boot up until I see the Safe Mode menu.

3. Once you are logged into the system as Administrator, try to edit and save the file.

I hope this helps Laugh
